Kids, It's New - Tootsie VM

Captain Tootsie is a surprisingly controversial figure in the history of comic book advertising. To some he is a figure to be ridiculed. Others recognize that his heroic roots are directly related to one of comic book's greatest figures, Captain Marvel; the Big Red Cheese, partiarch of the entire Marvel Family. Captain Tootsie himself, even had a try-out in his own comic book for two issues in 1950.

Whether or not this C.C. Beck commercial creation is an embarassment to comic books, or a hidden comic treasure is up to you to decide. Captain Tootsie probably could not be created today. In the current nutritional climate, where even children's TV icon, Cookie Monster, has acknowledged that too much sugar is a bad thing, using a superhero to sell sugary chocolate milk drink mix as health food would certainly bring howls of protest.

Here is a back cover strip from Target Comics, Vol. 5 No.4, Sept.-Oct. 1944, an era where the ad still bore the by line of the legendary creator to help you judge.
